To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge
from almost all the miseries of life. – W. Somerset Maugham
When I heard that Philip Roth has decided to retire from writing, I told
myself that it’s now time to revisit his books. Rereading five decades’ worth
of his work is a tribute to the author and an indulgence I can’t possibly
resist.
My birthday is just around the corner. And what could be a more precious
gift that I can give myself than to bask in the exciting novelty and comforting
familiarity of my cherished books?
