Acts of God

Friday, October 2, 2009

Act of God. It is such a curious term, isn’t it? It’s been mentioned a lot these past few days as certain parts of the world continue to suffer from the onslaught of natural disasters. Defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an act of God is “an extraordinary interruption by a natural cause (as a flood or earthquake) of the usual course of events that experience, prescience or care cannot reasonably foresee or prevent.” As a legal term--and for insurance purposes--it is defined as “an event which is caused solely by the effect of nature or natural causes and without any interference by humans whatsoever.” Thus, no one can be held responsible. Even God, I suppose.

Countless lives, livelihoods, homes were lost because of these inevitable “acts of God”, and no one could—or should--be held responsible. I hear people thanking God for sparing their lives, but, unable to keep blasphemous thoughts from intruding into my mind, I wonder why He, who they say is merciful, let these things happen in the first place. What are they for? Why do they occur? Are they mere products, or even instruments, of evolution? What have we done to have provoked nature’s wrath? I cannot understand. Since there seems to be no logic behind it, is it just a matter of acceptance then? Can somebody, please, make me understand?

A matter of realization - that in order for us to appreciate the sweetness of sugars, we have to, at times, savor the pungent tastes of bitter gourds.

i have no explanation and i try not to understand. life is unfair in many aspects.

"force majeure" is more inclusive than "acts of god".

life, indeed, is unfair in so many aspects. you give your all in the name of love, and what happenes to you? you get hurt. oopppss--sorry, the issue is bigger than me. hehehe.

seriously though, this is also one of the things i cannot understand -- innocent lives taken out due to wars, calamities, terrorist acts; corrupt politicians getting richer and more powerful; vain people mecoming more popular and "acceptable" to the society; hayyy... ewan ko ba.

angeli, if and when you find the answer, do invite me over a cup of coffee. i want to be "enlightened."

Acts of God/Nature, rings a bell to checking the insurance policy. In my profession, we term it as "fortuitous event/s".

I see it as unavoidable circumstance brought by nature, evolution I guess...

Hi Angeli, thanks for putting up that link a few days ago. I understand now. For sure your part of the world has received an almighty bashing.

As for acts-of-god, it's the term insurance companies use in order to escape payouts. They cannot however prove the existence of God now can they? I hope they get challenged in the courts some day on this convenient loop hole.

Some would say that these earth-changing things have been foreseen, and they're happening more often right now (Tsunami in Samoa, earthquake in Indonesia, flooding in Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and south of India) as we are nearing the 'end'.. That is, the 'end' of the Mayan Calendar Long Count towards 2012.. well who knows? :-)

I know it could be heart-wrenching to see/experience these upheavals but as they say, the soul is immortal. our physical bodies may die but the soul goes on in it's cosmic adventure.. Sooner or later, all of us have to leave anyway.. some just go earlier and some later, exiting the physical world in different ways. I, for one, takes refuge in the trust that the wise higher soul of all those who recently took their leave meant only the best..
