to keep fate from being fate

Monday, April 27, 2009

...human unrest is futile, the gods are wise and indifferent, and above them is fate, the supreme order to which even gods are subject. And what of men, what is their function. To challenge order, to change fate. For the better. For better or for worse, it makes no difference, the point is to keep fate from being fate.

-Jose Saramago, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, 1991

i've always been pondering about fate and destiny. i haven't reached my conclusion yet, or maybe my conclusion has been changing with the times as well. at this point, it seemed that everybody in the world was fighting hard to change their fates. :)

Maybe what makes us human is our ability to control our life, make choices and effect changes, instead of just letting fate, convention, tradition, history or habit determine it for us. It's about making life our own - no matter how futile it is.

i still believe in freewill over fate... through the use of our freewill, we create our own fate...
